Chapter 1 - THE ORDINARY WORLD & CALL TO ADVENTURE
Phoebe clutched her backpack straps, heart hammering a nervous rhythm against her ribs. Hiddenville High loomed before her, a gothic monstrosity of grey stone and arched windows, more like a castle than a school. Today was her first day, and the butterflies in her stomach were staging a full-blown rebellion. She wasn’t exactly the ‘new girl’—she’d lived in Hiddenville her whole life—but starting high school felt like a different planet. She’d spent the summer perfecting her ‘invisible girl’ act, blending into the background, avoiding eye contact. Now, facing the echoing halls, she felt anything but invisible.
She found her locker, a chipped metal box swallowed by the stone walls, and wrestled with the rusty combination. A shadow fell over her. She looked up into the intense gaze of Max, a senior with eyes like polished obsidian and a smirk that sent a shiver down her spine. He smelled faintly of woodsmoke and something else… something wild and unfamiliar.
"Looking for something?" he purred, his voice a low rumble that vibrated in her chest.
Before she could answer, he pressed a hand over her mouth, his touch strangely cold. He pulled her roughly into the locker, the metal groaning in protest. Fear clenched her throat. Then, she felt a sharp, searing pain in her neck. She gasped, a choked sound muffled by his hand.
He pulled back, his lips stained crimson. "Sorry," he whispered, his voice laced with a strange hunger. "Couldn’t resist." He leaned in, and his lips met hers in a kiss that was both brutal and strangely tender. The world spun; it was both terrifying and strangely exhilarating.
He pulled away again, his eyes burning with a desperate need. Another searing bite. This time, she felt a strange power surge through her, a warmth that chased away the fear, replaced it with something else entirely… something magical. Then, just as suddenly, he was gone.

Together, they trained Phoebe, teaching her to control her newfound abilities and understand the history of the Shadow Walkers.
Their training intensified when Max returned, stronger and more ruthless than before. He attempted to drain Phoebe of her life force, but her newly awakened powers, combined with the Keepers’ support, allowed her to fight back. The battle raged across the moonlit school grounds; shadows danced and clashed with light. The final confrontation took place in Aethelred's crypt, an ancient tomb beneath the school. Max, fueled by centuries-old magic, was a formidable foe. In a climactic battle, Phoebe used her newfound abilities to banish Max, breaking the cycle of darkness that had plagued Hiddenville for generations.
Exhausted but triumphant, Phoebe, Liam, and Zara emerged from the crypt.
